As at 31 December 2022, an estimated 1,028,700 people had been displaced since 2017 from the conflict in northern Mozambique. Food security has also been affected by frequent looting of food distributed in schools and kitchen utensils. The robbery of school equipment such as desks, laptops, and photocopiers further hampers learning. The increased violence is causing parents to avoid sending their children to school for protection risks. Armed gangs often use sexual violence to disseminate fear across the population and reassert their control over the territory. 30 schools have been closed in February alone because of attacks on education facilities, including bombings, burning, robberies, and kidnapping, assassination, and abduction of teachers and students. Between October 2022 and February 2023, at least 72 schools have been attacked, compared to eight in the same period the previous year. Schools have been targets of gang violence since 2021, raising education needs across the country. Increased political, economic, and social instability since mid-2021 has caused a rise in gangs’ violence and territorial control.
